GREAT WHITE Singer Says He Will Never Again Perform Song Interrupted By Rhode Island Fire

July 31, 2003

GREAT WHITE singer Jack Russell told Mark Arsenault of the Providence Journal last week that the California rock band may never finish the song interrupted by fire at their Feb. 20 show at The Station nightclub in West Warwick.

"I don't think I could ever sing that song again," Russell said. "It's hard enough as it is, was hard enough to go back on stage. It just wouldn't feel right to play that song. That would be too weird."

GREAT WHITE are in the middle of a 41-show summer concert tour to help raise funds for The Station Family Fund, a nonprofit organization to benefit the fire's victims.

Russell said that he's sure it's the right thing to do. "I did a lot of praying, and I had a lot of conversations — with friends, pastors, counselors — in deciding to undertake this tour." Those people helped him see that his voice, "is the gift God gave me, a gift I should use."

The band's first two benefit shows, July 22 and 23 in Colorado, raised just under $8,000 for the fund, she says. The money arrived July 25. Tonight's Nebraska show is the first of three this weekend for the band. The others are in Iowa and Missouri.

Russell can't be sure how much money his band can raise this summer.

"I could guess, anywhere from around 10 grand or more in a weekend," he says. "The thing for me is not just the money that we're raising from the shows, it's the awareness we're raising of the fund. It's a great cause — it's the right thing for us to do."
